I love the 4th of July, it’s such an iconic part of the summer, it’s finally hot outside, pool days are in full swing and friends and family are getting together to celebrate and BBQ, it’s a time reminiscent of how summer should feel. That patriotic, popsicle and hot dog feeling that kids and adults love, add in the fireworks and you have one perfect holiday! But, my kids are too young to stay up until 9:30 pm to watch a fireworks display and the loud noise scares them, so needless to say I don’t quite get the finishing touch on my 4th of July holiday. However, I still want my family to experience the fun of sparklers and poppers and enjoy time with friends. So what other ways can we still have an exciting and memorable 4th of July?
During the day there are usually parades, pool parties and kids activities at parks and festivals. We usually are at the pool cooling off and splashing around. But at night my kids are typically exhausted by 730 pm and are ready for bed, even though it’s still as bright as the bottle rockets booming outside. So I started thinking of other ways to have fun without the fireworks. Here are a few ideas that I think will keep your little ones busy and still let you enjoy the holiday.
Believe it or not the Denver Zoo is a great place to visit on the 4th of July, but I suggest going in the afternoon when it’s not as hot or crowded. The animals get special treats on the 4th too, and you can see them enjoy their patriotic goodies while strolling around. Plus, the train and carousel have just the right touch of Americana for the kids. https://www.denverzoo.org/
If you want to stay a little cooler, then head over to the Downtown Aquarium where you can enjoy the 4th of July under the sea. Monday-Thursdays are family nights from 3:00 pm to close, you can get discounts on admission, 4-D movie tickets and kids meals for $4.99. Plus they have face painting, a carousel and mystic mermaid shows. Let your kids get the American Flag painted on their face and you will definitely feel the spirit of days gone by. https://www.aquariumrestaurants.com
If you prefer to get out of town and head up to our famous mountain towns, then Frisco, CO is your spot. They have a “Fabulous 4th of July” event that transforms their small, quaint town into a little slice of Americana. Start off the day with a pancake breakfast, then join the parade, where kids can decorate their bikes with any and every American Flag and frill they want. Then, let your kids try their hook, line and sinker skills out in the fishing derby, and if that is not enough entertainment, if you can hang, Jefferson Starship is performing that evening! What a great way to celebrate the 4th. https://www.townoffrisco.com
The ways to enjoy the 4th of July are limitless, but if you are wanting to avoid the crowds and noise of those booming colors in the sky, which I personally love, then head to the other spots I mentioned and make this 4th of July memorable!
